Notes from heaven

We were on the lake with our lines in the water, deep into an extended lull in the action.

Thoroughly bored, my gradson was leafing through my fishing log - a pencil-on-paper record of every fish we've pulled from Lake Huron in 30 years - when this unmistakably red note fluttered from the pages of the notebook.

My heart fluttered right after it because I recognized it immediately.

Jessica, my dearly departed daughter (and best-ever fishing buddy) struggled with the written word, but refused to be intimidated by it. When we were on the boat she enjoyed making lists and particularly liked keeping an inventory of our hottest lures.

She used a variety of colloquial names (i.e, "Monkey Puke," "Goose") and names she invented. Sometimes she named them after people she knew. As you can see, she named one after herself. It was purple.

I knew all along, or course, that this red list was folded into the log because that's where I keep it. Still, whenever I come across it, I can see her writing it; I can hear her asking me how to spell something.

It's always a bit of a jolt, but time has softened the impact; 22 years after her death, the heart knows how to smile while shedding a tear.

As for my grandson, he liked the idea and christened a few lures, himself.

Im not sure whether or not to-do lists are on my list of things I have to write about but I'm making it one.

Today the thought just randomly occurred in my brain as for the reason why I start to hate to-do lists and also why I then stop doing them and then i forget why and randomly pick that habit back up again only to end up hating it again.

I don't break down the tasks enough and by the time I do it, the task ends up turning into multiple tasks an by the time I end up crossing out that one bullet point after doing all that I feel demotivated as fuck.

For example, applying for a job takes multiple steps like reading and highlighting the application and then changing your resume and then making a cover letter, and then after doing all of that actually DOING the application or writing up that email.

Same with more mundane daily tasks like folding the laundry. One should be putting away the hanger and then also putting away the clothes into their separate categories otherwise the worse the depression gets the more likely you are to just have piles upon piles of unorganised folded laundry slowly taking over your entire floor space. 

The funny thing is the initial reason why I always start doing to-do lists is because it motivates me and I always end up stopping because it does the opposite.

A big thing for me is writing to-do lists the night before. While I agree I do have a lot of ideas and things I tell myself I won't forget if I write them down straight away. 

I think the solution, or more so the middle path to take with this conundrum is to do both. Still do the night time brain dump on myself because it helps to plan my day the next day, however, still make a new to-do list the next day that actually breaks those tasks into more manageable bits that I’ll feel excited to cross off.

Maybe I still won't get through all of them but something about ticking off 22 of your 30 point list of tasks over only ticking off 6 things from your 10 tasks of the day feels less humiliating to deal with.
